Holiday Survival Tips!
A glance at your holiday social calendar is a good indicator that you may have to make a few dietary compromises during the holiday season. Aside from overt food allergies or foods that you absolutely MUST stay away from, here are a few guidelines to help you successfully navigate situations where the food might not be what you’re accustomed to!
-
Practice the 90/10 rule: If 90% of the time, your diet is stellar, you’ve got some room for an occasional indulgence or special treat. Don’t go crazy, but if your aunt’s infamous apple pie is calling your name, go ahead and have a small piece!
-
Adult beverage substitutes: Almost every holiday involves adult beverages that are not only loaded with calories but also not the best choice when it comes to your liver and your overall health. Instead of having a mixed beverage or a 2nd glass of wine, ask for bitters and soda. The bitters will help improve your digestion and keep you from feeling full and bloated after your meal.
- Don’t starve all day to “save” your calories for the party. Skipping meals to save up calories for an indulgent treat will backfire every time. When you’re too hungry, the temptation to reach for all the delicious-looking appetizers is just too much to resist! It’s better to eat a small snack containing protein, fiber, and a healthy fat before you go. This will keep your blood sugar stable and help you maintain control of your portions.
All of us make concessions once in a while. But it’s not worth the regret to go crazy and eat what you know isn’t good for you! With a little prior planning, you’ll be able to navigate your social calendar with grace and ease!
