Remember This Gift
In a couple of short days, all the gifts will be opened, bellies will be full, and another Christmas will be in the books.
And you’ve done a ton to get ready! You’ve searched high and low for the right gifts to show your love and appreciation for those you care most about. Maybe you’ve planned out gatherings and sent out cards. Perhaps you even found that perfect ugly Christmas sweater for the next holiday get-together.
In the midst of all there is to do to prepare, sometimes it’s hard to enjoy the moment once you’re actually in it. To help with that this holiday season, consider giving yourself the gift of being present.
While this is something you can do all year long, being in the moment during the holidays can feel extra special. It’s more than sitting on the couch at your in-laws or making an appearance at a friend’s holiday party.
Being present is taking the time to notice the smiles around you, the smells in the room, and to halt your racing thoughts long enough to enjoy that hug. It’s about being fully in the moment for those all-too-fleeting times with loved ones.
Why does being in the moment matter? Present-moment awareness can:
- Reduce feelings of anxiety or depression
- Lower distractions, which strengthens your relationships
- Promote acceptance in your romantic relationships
Embracing the moment-to-moment experience may be easier to do than you think. Here are three tips to get you “in the now”
-
Use your five senses. Savor the smell and taste of your morning coffee. Relish the softness of your blanket. Listen to distant sounds of birds chirping or the crackle of the fireplace. Feel the warmth of the water as you wash your hands.
-
Show gratitude. This could be something small, like recognizing the sun shining or how refreshing your morning shower feels. Or you can involve others, such as paying it forward to someone in line at the drive-thru. Look for ways to show appreciation across all aspects of your life.
- Serving with awareness. It’s no secret that this year is a tough one for many. Look for ways you can help others during this uniquely stressful time. Listen to what others are saying without assuming you know. And then see how you can help make their day a little brighter.
As you move through these next couple of weeks with friends and family, try being in the moment as much as you can. It’s a gift not only for others but to yourself.
